Know Your Deadlines

When are taxes due?

For most taxpayers, the federal filing deadline is April 15. If that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the due date shifts to the next business day. For Tax Year 2024, the deadline is April 15, 2025. Extensions are available until October 15, but any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.

How long should I keep my tax records?

Keep tax returns and supporting documents for at least three years from the filing date (the standard IRS audit window). Keep them for seven years if you claim certain loss deductions or want extra protection. Major documents, like home purchase records or investment cost basis, should be kept indefinitely until the asset is sold.
